A friend of mine tells me his newborn baby girl started producing breast milk which has not subsided. A local doctor said this is nothing to worry about and I was wondering if anyone had heard of such a thing.

When babies first come into the world they have their mothers hormones raging through their bodies. When a newborn babies nipples are squeezed sometimes milk will come out. Also some newborn baby girls will have a "mock period." This is nothing to worry about. "What to expect the First Year" talks about this in the first couple months. Have your friend read it and she'll understand more.

Yes. The hormones the baby is exposed to during the birth can cause both boys and girls to produce drops of milk from their nipples (they don't have breasts per se). If the parents leave it alone, it will stop very quickly.

Newborns can be affected by the hormones from their mother. I would want a second oppinion tho and a better explanation from the doctor to feel at ease.

It does happen in the very early stages, because hormones from the mother's body are still in the baby's system. It happens to male babies as well. It isn't that unusual, and nothing to worry about.

Being in the womb, gestation, and being born creates a swirling sea of hormones. If the pediatrician is not worried, I wouldn't be either. On the other hand, if lactation continues for more than a couple of weeks, I'd update the pediatrician and see if he/she is still not worried.

lactation in a newborn is perfectly normal. I know it's gross, but there is nothing wrong with your baby. Even grown men can lactate, they just need to take the right hormones. I've even heard that some men breastfead. Ew.

My daughter did this. It is nothing to worry about. It is just a hormone thing. My doctor told me to just leave them alone and within a few weeks it stopped

Yes definitely, even male babies can make milk. It has something to do with hormones and being breastfed. Nothing to worry about.

Yes it is normal. She might also have vaginal discharge. It won't last long and it is nothing to worry about. I am a mother of 2 daughters and it happened to both of them the day they were born.
