Well, if you're chiefly hanging out with your friends of the same orientation, then you don't have to look all that "real," right? I know that lots of guys go for a deliberately overdone look--sort of an exaggeration of femininity.
If you want to "pass," though, then you need to study women by watching them closely--just as an actor would--and imitate their typical gestures, mannerisms, way of walking, etc. You will need to shave very closely, of course. And you'll proably need to pluck your eyebrows--which can, unfortunately, look kinda weird when you're not in drag/cross-dressing.
Pick up a magazine like "Allure," or even "Seventeen," because they give lots of makeup tips. Alternately, you can go to the bookstore or the library and pick up entire books on the same subject by famous makeup artists.
What to wear depends on your build and what YOU feel comfortable wearing. Remember, "real" women often wear clothing that could be somewhat masculine, such as jeans and a tee shirt and sneakers, with short hair. If you're already kinda delicate and feminine-looking, then you won't need to do a lot of heavy-handed things to look like a gal who's dressed casually. If you're larger, then you'll need to shop either at a cross-dressers' specialty shop (espec. for shoes) or at a place that caters to tall and/or fat women.
False breasts can be achieved in a number of ways. An old "drag queen" trick that I've seen involves putting bird seed into nylon hose (ask one of your friends to show you how it's done).
This is a little bit too complicated to answer in one note on Yahoo Q&A. Are you sure that your buddies couldn't help you out, giving suggestions, critiquing your look, etc.? Honestly, I think that'd be your best bet.

Are you a tranny or just a crossdresser?
I'm a real woman, but I always tell guys I know not to shave their faces. Rather, use a cream like Nair (for the face) so that you avoid razor bumps. Also, be sure to pick the right shade of foundation...DermaBlend is really good (usually found at Sears or JC Penny). Don't be afraid to ask the girl at the make up counter for help. Always keep your eyebrows neat...don't overpluck or over arch (full brows are youthful)...just follow the natural line of your brows.
The rest of the make up application process is the same as women's. Carmindy.com gives great advice.

for clothing that suits your shape hava look at the web site for the tv show What not to Wear - find a body shape that is similar to yours and follow the basic hints. Don't wear loud colours that clash!! Make sure your makeup tones suit you and unless you want to stand out speak in a quieter softer voice. if you wear a wig - find a natural looking one, not one that looks like someone used it to mop the floor with. its always easier to approach n talk to someone who presents themselves well than to try to keep straight face when a person looks like they have throw together a clown outfit - not trying to b horrible its just my experience (i have friends who crossdress) and people r more likely to think you r genuine - hope this helps

wear whatever you feel good in, but as far as makeup don't do thick foundation (my cross friends call it pancake, and i don't have the heart to tell them ug) but use something light like the new loreal mineral bases and shave really really well, and check out the "making faces" books by the late great kevin aucoin. good luck with your fabulous self!!!

You should try going to a MAC makeup counter for make up; their make-up is known to be for all ages, gender, etc.
