US men soccer sucks but US women soccer is one of the strongest in the world. Since the first World Cup for women soccer in 1991, US has won the championship 2 times and third place 2 times.

In the US soccer (ugh!) is regarded in a different way. It is more a sport that is practised by women. Men play more in schools and universities than in professional teams. In the past there have been professional teams but there were playing a lot of foreign players there.
I believe however that US in on the right track now that a new league has been set up and everything seems to become more the way it is in Europe.
After that it is only a matter of time before the National team can profit from that and they will improve. The current team is a team of talents that not yet have enough experience. I have a feeling (also judging from the impressions I get on Y!A) that more and more people are behind the whole football thing.
In 1994 FIFA tried to break football in the USA by organizing the World Cup in that country. That did not work out mainly because there was no league at the time. I also remember David Letterman making soccer jokes in his show which were off the mark.
I hope US will participate again in 2010 so we can see the improvements.

I think it could possibly in the far future become an international success, but not to the level that Soccer is. A reason is because the rest of the world really doesn't like anything American. There are a lot of countries out there that do not like the US and if the US forces it into Europe as they say they'll try to establish franchises there, then I don't think that will help. It would make more since to have the population of a country be demanding of a franchise rather than just putting one there. If there is a team in Europe before there is one in Los Angeles, then something is wrong. That wouldn't make since to me. To the comment made about injuries: Well, I doubt players that play rugby and soccer (average players) get paid as much money as American football players. If a star player gets hurt, then why would any reasonable person put him back in the game. If Peyton Manning dislocated a finger, I'd bench him for a week after a doctor says he can play because he's that valuable! I believe rugby players have to play because they know that if they don't they could lose money out of it. Just so you know, I know NOTHING about rugby, but I do know that the monetary systems are different in each country.

The world hates the US. Look people say its jsut sports but itz not JUST sports. Look at the US and Soviets in the olympics during the coldwar. Wht am tryin to say. The world cup wus rigged so da US xcouslnt win. Im not sayin thier good. Thier not rhey really suck but if u look at those calls. The refs were totaly against the US . 2 Red cards for sum BS fouls that most refs wouldnt even call a yellow card with. That penalty kick. Hey the team needs to improve big time but the world hates the US the world called people wont let the US be dominant in a sport they wont even like. NOBODY in the US likes soccer well not nobody but most ppl dont even know wut a yellow card means. Sports are jsut a another way of people to express feelings towards eachother. Countiries do this all da time when they cant got to war. Bottom line the world cup will NEVER allow the US to win unless either we have a damn good legend dare say jordanise camparason team or we solve our foregin relationship problems with the WORLD.

Totally agree with Dee.
In Europe we dont like sports other than soccer, especially american football or baseball. Only Volley or Basket are played. We like those as a kids sports. And we dont care at all.
I.e. in Italy sportive federations receive cash form the national sport committee. A huge amount, many more than the whole other sports. And the national committee receive a lot of money from soccer because it manages the sport bettings. A close system, it don't allow minor sports federation to grow, when soccer grows exaggerately.

They have a history. They reached the 1/4 finals four years ago and they were hosts in 1994. Football(soccer) is not such a big sport for the Americans. I think they were unlucky to go out this year they have some good players.

My bet is that it is because of the way the pro teams recruit. Here in the states, Colleges look mostly for great athletes for the big 3 sports here: Football, baseball, and basketball. Then I would think that unless a player really loved soccer, he/she would end up playing one of the other sports. Since the womens end of it does not include football, I think that is why we seem to do well in womens soccer, cause the talent is not pulled away for other sports.

how can US has history in Football World Cup when they play soccer all the time? it is impossible!!!
i do not hate US sport. i just do not see that the US like to live with majority people in the world. instead of living diversify with other races in the world, US try to conquer and change other people to follow their way.
what will US feel if other people around the world play and call american football in another name? example, rugby

US hasn't cared about football until very recently. In fact US doesn't care about most international sports except olympics. That's the only international event the US cares about.
