Sounds silly but why don't u either get a photo of yourself and enlarge it with a colour photo copier or do the same with a friend-- obviously somebody who is well in proportion

There are various ways to approach this.

First , let me explain to you the Eight Head Figure Theory. Give or take a little , the vast majority of people have a head that will fit into the body size 8 times from head to toe. Remember this when designing , scale is very important.

Look for images of people that inspire you , try any Catalogue or magazine for example. Note the proportions when sketching. If it helps you can
do a rough trace of the outline as a template, then use this as a base for proportion when sketching.
Always observe the natural way that the body moves and how garments work in conjunction with this.
As a final method you may choose to buy a small pose-able wooden figure used for sketching proportion. These are available at most Art shops but can be quite expensive.
My advise is try using the template method and improving your sketching by practising. By using this method you will soon start to improve your understanding of proportion and movement.

The technical side of pattern cutting and manufacturing garments are whole other aspects of the final process but the research followed by the design is the basis.

I hope this is help full to you, i studied Fashion for five years.

I suggest you find an adjustable sewing mannequin/form. That way you can design something for yourself that will fit well. Sew away - I made some of the best outfits ever!
