There is OTC medication for this ... it could be several things, so I would check the packaging of the medications available. Petco has a great variety of meds and they staff is usually very knowledgable on exactly what to treat the fish with. You can even take your fish into them and let them look at it. First you need to find out why your fish have this. what are your water parameters? your water may be very acidic which can cause open sore wounds in your fish, or maybe you have introduced new fish into your aquarium first before treating them.
I would do a 50% water change . Make sure its not straight from the tap. you can then buy some medication at the pet store it is called melafix . Its all natural extracted from tea trees. repairs damaged fins, ulcers, and open wounds.

my fish has this too right now it is called hole in the head the only thing i found that works is a medicine called paragon....it works great....good luck it took me three medicines to find one that worked....

i agree with crazy4beads (sorry if i misspelled)...melafix works wonders and its all natural, its made to cure open wounds and external and some internal infections, and water change wouldnt hurt too much either.
