It's more than likely Ich. You did not say whether it is a marine or fresh water fish. You need to prepare a seperate quarantine tank. Ich is caused by a parasite that only becomes active on the fish when the fish is stressed. I highly recommend keeping "stress coat" and "stress zyme" in your tanks. The treatment for freshwater fish would be to submerge them just past the top fin in a solution of marine salt water such as "instant ocean" or the like, add 1 drop methylblu. Leave fish in for 7 minutes then dump saltwater/methylblu solution out and place fish in quarantine tank.
For a marine fish, use the same procedure but use fresh water instead of salt.
For the next week make sure the lighting in the aquarium is off and there are no bright lights reaching the tank. You can even cover the quarantine tank with a toiwel or blanket.
This does two things. The opposing water knocks the ick off the fish, the intense methylblu treatment acts as "fish valium" to sedate the fish and reduce stress, as well as a preventative for the regrowth of the parasite.
I realize it sounds like a cruel procedure, but it's just the opposite. It's the only thing that might save a fish that is far gone with ich.

It sounds like a type of fungal infection. Go to your local pet or fish store and buy a medication that treats fungal infections. There are a few different types, most work well. Do not buy the little fizzing pellets though - they have a bad reputation. Buy a medication that is a chemical.
Make sure you take out your carbon out of your filter or the carbon will just absorb the medication.

Okay folks ich (aka ick, aka white SPOT) looks like small white dots the size of a grain of salt, or larger. Not everything white is itch. White powdering is velvet. Fuzzy patches are a fungus.
This sound like a fungus. You need an anti-fungal agent. Your fish store will have a number of them.

I really can't understand some people. You find that a majority of kids who are "wrapped in cotton wool" by their parents do turn out to be disruptive. They don't live in the real world! As for microchipping - my two cats and two dogs are microchipped not my kids! Like many of the respondents I used to go out at 9 in the morning on school holidays to catch a bus to see my friends. I would return home about 5 or 6. As long as my mum or dad knew roughly where I was I was OK. I also used to let my kids go out but, unlike my parents, I had access to a car so could pick them up if necessary. This was before mobile phones so I always made sure they had 10p for a public phone. We still had dodgy people around then but, if one of them spoke to you, you would tell a "grown up" and he./she would sort them out! Nowadays, it is such a compensation-chasing world that you daren't even speak to someone who is doing wrong for fear of recriminations. I would not like to watch my kids in nursery via webcam - it would make me more stressed! It might be an interesting programme to watch although it will probably make my blood boil!! Thanks for letting me know it is on.

That's not Ich, which are white spots on the fish body. This infection is called Fungus. Luckily, there are variety treatments for Fungus, just go to a pet store and ask about Fungus. Unfortunately, Fungus is very easy to be repeated so you always have to becareful about secondary infection.

I believe that is what they call Ich - I'm not sure as I've never seen it, but check this website:
http://www.peteducation.com/index.cfm?cls=16
If it IS Ich there are solutions you can buy at the pet store to get rid of it. And whatever it is you need to get rid of it because it will kill your fish.
That website is a really good source of information. In case that link doesn't work go directly to the main page:

...
And here's the article about Ich

If it is a regular sort of pet fish, it is likely ick. Ick is a nasty fish dissease. There are many things to cure ick. you should go to your local pet store and get a bottle of liquid to put in your tank (tablets are best ignored.) The liquid in the bottle is usually a blueish coloured copper compound of some sort,

Chances are this is a fungus, and there are several OTC meds that will correct this. Make sure to read the back of the package for proper diagnosis and treatment.
