They are for REAL, my friend.
JIm Leyland is the main reason for this.
He preaches "nine innings"...which means that the game is 9 innings long and to never give up.
In previous seasons, if The Tigers were dwon by 2 or more in the 4th inning or later, they would simply give up and not even try.
Also Leyland insists on each player getting mentally and physically ready for each game.
We have a good mix of seasoned veterans (Rodgers, Guillen, Ordenez, Rodriguez) and talented young players (Bonderman, Maroth, Verlander, Zumaya, Inge, Wilson, Infante, Granderson, Thames, and on and on).
However, The White Sox do have a better team and will once again win The World Series.
I believe The Tigers will finish in 2nd place, and quite possibly be the wild card....as The Blue Jays will win the East and the yankmes and deadsux will be at home watching the playoffs.

At first my thought was that they were just lucky. Slowly, I'm starting to think that they're more on the real side. Every year, though, there is a Cinderella type of team that makes noise. Typically, however, these teams start to fade come August. And I still tend to think that will be the case with the '06 Tigers. If I were to predict the playoff teams right now I would say:
AL East: New York Yankees
AL Central: Chicago White Sox
AL West: Oakland Athletics
Wild Card: Boston Red Sox

Yes, they're for real. Any team that has good pitching and even an average offense has a chance. Unfortunately for them, the White Sox are for real also and the stretch run may hurt the Tigers. If they manage to get into a playoff series though, everything changes.

As a lifelong Tiger fan, this is the best team they have had since the 80's. They have good pitching, decent hitting. I agree with some others that they might not win the division, but they are closer then in years past. I just wish more fans would come out to support the team.

The Tigers are for real. Jim Leyland is an excellent manager and will be named Manager of the Year at the end of the 2006 season.

As a fan, I can honestly say they are KIND of for real. I dont think they will be able to keep up right now in the playoffs with the BoSox or Yankees, but they are a whole lot better pitching-wise than they have been in at least a decade. And considering they are scoring enough to win without really hitting many longballs, I think shows improvement too.

Right now they are definitely overachieving, but as long as they can hold off the White Sox they should be able to make a playoff run. Otherwise, they'll have to wait another year because the wild card will most likely come out of the AL East.

I think its a little of both. They've gotten amazing pitchign from Rogers, Bonderman, etc...and they're hitting, well, granted Shelton isnt belting 9 homeruns every 9 games, the hitting is still good. I think the White Sox will win the division, but we'll see.

A little of both I think. Leyland is a GREAT coach and can make just about anyone look good. They may not be as good as the record looks yet but they proably will be.

They are for real...
Good veterans, great youngsters, solid starters, solid bullpen, solid lineup...
They probably aren't "best record in the league" for real, but they have an excellent shot at making the playoffs.
