it is a motor that runs on direct current. like a battery. the current goes in one direction only, from negative to positive.

In North America our electric utility system is AC (alternating Current) meaning that the flow changes one way then the other (at 60 changes a second in fact) and the system for an AC motor must be a little different or else it wouldn't spin. it would change from clockwise to counter-clockwise 60 times a second.

so it's function is to spin (like any motor) but using the power from an electric source that does not alternate. Direct Current
