The main design thrust behind Qwerty key placement was to keep frequently used pairs of letters seperated, in order that the mechanical striking arms of typewriters would not jam together.

Also, letters that would frequently follow one another were placed on opposite sides, so that while one key was being pressed, the other hand could move into position.

Dvorak users maintain that is far more comfortable and produces less wrist and hand strain. Also, Dvorak typists outperform Qwerty in words per minute trials.

most commonly used letters were placed far apart in QWERTY to slow down typing speed as early type writers were gettin jammed.
