If you were born in Africa and moved to America later your are an African American...or the other way around. If you were born in the US and you live here you are an American. Period. I don't go around calling myself French American because my ancestors were from France and frankly it really just irritates the hell out of me when black Americans call themselves African Americans when most have never been to Africa. And those are usually the ones who scream for equality while TRYING to single themselves out!

People who's ancestors came from Africa. Like Native Americans ancestors were native to this land. Although, I've never heard the term Irish-American or something like that. HMMM. I think I know what your asking though. If a person is born in America that just makes them a plain ol American right?

Some say all people in the USA that has dark/black skin is. I know a few people though that are 1st generation American from parts of Africa and it burns their *** when folks that were not born in Africa call themselves African American.
So to answer the question, quess it just depends what people want to label themselves.
