Go to Indian Railway site http://www.indianrail.gov.in/ , choose trains between two stations; from among the trains plying, select the train you wish to travel, press the "get Schedule" button at the bottm and you get the station by station, kilometre by kilometre, minute by minute description of your journey, without any hassle and bothering anyone else.

Pondicherry is 1284 kms. away from Mumbai (check site link given below)
Pondicherry Railway Station has only few trains which runs between Pondicherry and Villupuram. The biggest railway station which is closer to Pondicherry is Chennai Railway Station. By superfast train, it takes about 24 hours (by mail train about 26 - 28 hours) to reach Chennai from Mumbai and thereafter you need to take a local train from Chennai Central station to Villupuram which is about 4- 6 hours train journey - go to the second link for full details

Reach Chennai by Train / Air
Take a bus (There are bus every 30 mins) which will take about 3 hours through East Coast Road (ECR).
Simple way to reach Pondy.
