It depends on the year... my '96 was one of those that (I found out too late) got a "highest maintenance" rating for its class. And it has needed expensive fixes! My sister's '98 Neon has been no trouble...but it's very low mileage. Check at cars.com to find a rating for the year(s) you're looking at. Extra comment: we have found that Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth didn't put a lot of quality into the cheaper cars...maybe it's changed lately.

Don't buy one!
Please research "edmunds.com" or "consumerreports.com"
Neons are not reliable and also they are designed by an American company.
Foreign engineered cars are so incredible superior to american cars it's not even close. I am not kidding and not trying to piss anyone off. This is a fact!
Ford and GM are in a world of hurt. Dodge has a nitch market but still can't hold a candle to Honda or Toyota.
Here are some more fun facts for you:
1) Honda and toyota commercials do not compare their vehicles to american ones. Do Chevy, Ford, Pontiac, etc compare to Accords, Camry's, Corollas. Answer Yes! What does this tell you?
2) ALL vehicle manufacturers lie about MPG! Every single one! Look it up. Do you know who lies the most? GM
Do you know who lies the least? Honda.
3) Ford bought out and now operates Jaguar. Take a look at Jaguar ratings overall. They have been declinging year after year.
4) Look at Ford's hybrid suv. Where do you think they got the technology? It's older Toyota tech. Look it up.
Please do your reseacrh and avoid Vehix.com. It's bogus and is only getting play from their commercials. Edmunds has been doing everything they do for years and years now, except edmunds is more professional.
Please don't get suckered into a crap car. Thats all I'm asking.
Now one more piece of advice. I bought a new car in 2004 for invoice ($3000) below sticker with zero miles on it. How? One phone call to dealership and informed them I am buying through the Sam Club Membership. If you have Sams and want to save without ANY HAGGLING WHAT SO-EVER. Look on their website.
Again, DO YOUR RESEARCH and you will never regret a purchase.
Added response: Recalls? So what every single manufacturer ever has had more than one. Whats your point? Payoff consumer reports ok! sure thats got to be true.

I owned a 1995 Plymouth Neon Highline 5 spd and thought the worl of it until I wrecked it in an accident. The 5spd is definitely a good option for this car as it makes it a whole lot more fun to drive. My 95 5spd will is also quicker than my brother's 99 auto. Both cars have been completely trouble free. I had the head done on the car at 200 000 km which is pretty good for this car, and that has been it. Depending on how it was driven I could get up to 42 mpg and it had enough jam to beat my friend's sunfire GT.
On the downside, there is a bit of wind noise at higher speeds because of the door design and it is a little bit noisy. All in all, it was a good little car.

SHUT UP MITCH
Ok, we bought a 96 Plymouth Neon and it's been pretty dependable. We bought it 2yrs ago @ 96,000 miles and went road-tripping through Montana! It had no probs @ high alt.
Tranny slipped a little but not after we got transmission flushed.
Mileage is not good. Maybe air filter needs replaced. It has 155,000 now and it gets roughly 27 MPG. Don't know about newer ones.

I drive a Neon Expresso and think it works just fine. It's green 4-door 4-cylinder, very typical of this model. The oil seems to break down rather quickly, but it doesn't appear to burn or leak. It's economical on fuel. It has ok low-end pick-up and it's gone as fast as 120mph! Other than brakes about a year and a half ago and routine oil changes, replacing spark plugs and wires, I've had no major problems with it. It just turned 140,000 miles today!
Of course, your experience may vary. Good luck!

My girlfriend had a 98 with 156000 miles on it. No problems at all. Just manufacturers recommended services. Don't listen to Mitch about that whole Jap-American differences. Thats just a bunch of bullsh!t. Consumers Reports is paied off by Honda and Toyota. Recently Toyota announced a recall of 567000 vehicles due to faulty equipment. Huh wheres that "Japanese Reliability" now?

I own a 1998 Dodge Neon 2 door and I have just shy of 97,000 miles on it. the only major work done it was just lately I had my Tranny oil drained and my bans adjusted. If this ole car of mine should ever die, I'll be getting another one with out thinking of anything else.
