Well, we find out in book five that Harry's parents had thrice defied Voldemort before their deaths. I'm sure that that must tie in somewhere, but I bet that it's more of the fact that they're the parents of "The Boy Who Lived."
As for the gold, I'm almost certain that it has nothing to do with their being famous. J.K. Rowling has said in interviews that Harry's wealth is a result of James' family having a lot of money; that most of it was inheirited. It was Nicolas Flamel who had the ability to transform objects into gold, not the Potters.

No, they were just normal wizarding folk, I think maybe James was an Auror, not quite sure, but I do remember reading that.
As far as making their pwn gold, you're thinking of Dumbledore's friend Sir Nicholas Flamel, who created The Sorcerors Stone, a magical object that can be used in turning things into gold, as well as granting being able to give somebody eternal life.

they didnt have the abilitity to make their own gold... the owner of the Philosophers Stone could do that ..... Harry Potter's parents were famous for their bravery ... they died to save harry's life... which in turn gave harry a protection and survived the killing curse of Lord Voldemort...

Lily Potter was not a muggle, she was muggle born, "mud blood".
They were both powerful, but their fame stemmed from defying and being killed by Voldemort, and even more importantly for the survival of their son Harry.

Making gold was Rumplestiltskin's ability. Mrs. Potter was a muggle too.
