Not necessarily the scariest, but which one had the creepiest atmosphere ever? I would say it would have to be a Stephen King or John Carpenter movie, but can't decide which one.

Opinions?

No way - it's "Shutter" - a Thai movie - I am a huge horror fan, and this is the only one that has ever truly gotten under my skin

"Silence of the Lambs".
This is the movie that always comes to mind first when I see questions like this.
I know it isn't a traditional "Horror" film, but I can truly say it is the only movie that I was scared while watching, as opposed to just being startled.
I remember seeing it in the theater and feeling more and more creeped out as the film went on.
Lechter is one of the scariest characters I can imagine: a Genius with a masterful understanding of the human mind and no moral qualms about using that knowledge to entertain his twisted, sociopathic sense of "fun".
It worked on a deep psychological level and scared the Hell out of me.
As far as "traditional" Horror movies go, I'd have to say "The Exorcist". Creeped me out for days after I saw it for the 1st time!

John Carpenter made a movie called "The Prince of Darkness"
that movie creeped me out as a teenager. There are a couple of images that still creep me out.

Of course the best is The Exorcist always. The Shining as well. If you can get your hands on two very old films called "Burnt Offerings" and "Let's scare Jessica to death", they are worth watching ...

Japanese horror movies are the creepiest. Watch either "Ichi the Killer" or "The Audition" and you'll see what I mean.
