Women ovulate (release an egg) 14 days BEFORE the first day of their flow. Because both eggs and sperm live for a while, natural family planning for women who are VERY regular, and who do not check basal body temperature or mucus signs, consists of avoiding sex for 10 days each cycle.

In other words, unless you are very regular, keep careful records, and are willing to forego sex about one third of the time, there is no safe time.
But if you really want to use natural family planning (aka the rhythm method) get a good book on the subject. Otherwise, use birth control.

Without knowing your exact menstural cycle, which at anytime that can alter, you can never be completely safe. You are not as likely to get pregnant after your period. It is best to always use birth control or a condom or both, unless you are trying to get pregnant.

The best sex is during the menstrual cycle. I am not kidding, women are the horniest at that time. A lot of men can't handle it. They don't know what they are missing. Find a man that can and you'll love it.
