First, don't be so vague. Out-of-state isn't very specific. If you want a transfer to a specific location with your company, then sit down and make a few notes about why you want that.

HINT: If all the reasons you want the transfer is because of you, you're going to have a hard time being successful. If, on the other hand, you think the transfer would also do something that will benefit the company, then keep that in mind when you have your discussion with the boss.

The company is there to make money and products, not to cater to your wants. Make your pitch for transfer by highlighting what good that will do for the company. You'll have a reasonable chance of success if you do.
