I'm not planning to off myself, someone just told me that the world needed me.
How true can this be for any individual?

The world needs everybody to wake up and take care of it.

It's disturbing to see the trend we are absolutely heading towards. Specifically I mean wrecking the Earth. Overpopulating the Earth.., etc.

I have read some disturbing trends such as in about 20 years 1/4 of the earth will not have sufficient clean running water. Clean water is the number one biggest reason we have longer lifespans than say 200 years ago. Why? Cleaning and Drinking good water works miracles compared with drinking and bathing in infected, dirty, polluted water.

Lets see what else. Ozone depleting. Sun is more destructive than ever. Example: Did people walk around concerned about skin cancer in the 1970's?

Lungs and noses. Go to any public place in this world and I tell you lungs and noses are much weaker than I remember them a few decades ago. Example - Sniff Sniff. Cough Cough. You can go to any public place however big or small and I guarantee you will hear coughing, sniffling or both. BTW, don't get a flu shot if you don't absolutely need one. You'll sound like a cocaine addict for a long time. C'mon laugh.

Should I mention Oil? How about politicians? Hey I don't mean to be a doomsdayer, my point is we need you to help. We need you to be responsible. We need you and everyone to care.

I see lots of beauty in this world and I'd like to keep it. Answer: Yes we need you.

There never has been, nor ever will be another person on this planet exactly like you. Ever heard of the Chaos Theory or the Butterfly Effect? Even though you don't realize it, you could do something so seemingly insignificant that would affect someone else's life to a great degree....
Imagine this: You smile at someone while walking down the street. Nothing big. You made eye contact with the person and smiled as you walked past. That person, happy with the positive human contact, then goes home and cooks a great meal for their sig. other. Their sig. other has had a hard day at work, but feels better knowing that their husband/wife cares and loves them. They get hot and heavy and 9 months later they have a new child. That child grows up and goes to college. They become a scientist. They become the scientist that cures AIDS, or cancer, or SIDS, or makes the dream of living on another planet a reality. All because you smiled.

See? You could have a renowned effect on the world as we know it. Does the world need you? Absolutely.

I would say that there are different ways of looking at the word "need". On one hand you could say that the world doesn't need anyone. If all humanity ceased to exist, the world would keep turning. Or, for humanity's sake, if any one person ceased to exist, the rest of humanity would adjust and continue.

On another hand, you could say that for existence to be what it is, it needs to have all of these elements, including people. Looking from this perspective, you could perhaps say that existence needs the human element (and every other element) to be complete. From this standpoint you could say, "Well, it just needs any person, not me in particular." But then what makes you different from anyone else? You are filling the role of being a human being just as much as anyone else is. So, in a sense, existence needs you in order to be complete.

I have read/heard some things from physics saying that you can't take any particle out of existence, or the universe would collapse (since matter is neither created or destroyed). Though I'm not that up to speed on physics. Maybe I'll ask about that.

I feel like there's something (perhaps beyond my understanding) that I'm trying to get at here, but I'm not doing an adequate job of explaining it.

Does the 'world' need you ?

It depends on where you draw the boundaries of the 'world'...

Truly, planet Earth does not need the human race ! And it's only our over-inflated egos that have us believe we're killing the planet. More realistically, we might make it unfit for human habitation but to destoy life on earth may be impossible for us unless it was a conscious, concerted effort.

So, down-sizing your 'world' to the species...
Again. Each individual (bar 'Adam & Eve') is unimportant, and like a colony of bees the death of one will not disturb the existence of the group.

We can keep on reducing the scale down thru continents, cultures, countries etc, but the reality is none of us are 'needed' until we get down to our own little 'world'- the people we interact with. The lives we are a part of. The love we give and receive.

At this level each and everyone of us is very very needed, and in my little 'world' I am a Prince, and my wife is a Princess. My world has lords, regents, and hiers. And everyone is wanted and loved and needed too.

Well, in your own little corner of the world, you may be necessary to someone.. you do have a mom, a dad, siblings, etc..? How about friends? do you have a job? If so, someone there needs you!
We do all have roles to play... we're different thigns to different people, too! And, most of us would be missed, were we no longer here... at least by SOMEONE!

I really doubt the world NEEDS anyof us. Though there are probably a bunch who could and would make the world a better place. How could you tell who would and wouldn't be good to have around?

Spiritually speaking, yes, the world needs you or you wouldn't be here. You mean the world to at least one person, so, again, yes the world needs you.

it depends on whether u believe the world needs you or not. if you can do something good for the world then it needs you , otherwise i guess no one would even care for you, forget needing you.
