No-one actually knows for sure, it was first used in 1871 in a game of rugby between England and Scotland.
Theory 1 The monarchy who descended from the house of lancaster were associated with the English rose.
Theory 2 The guy that founded Rugby School was given permission by the queen (house of lancaster) to use the rose as his emblem.
Theory 3 Who cares, probably chosen because it looks harmless but has thorns .

The Rose is the symbol of England. There was a War called the War of the Roses between Lancashire and somewhere else. I cant remember now. It was also called the Tudor Rose which I would imagine has come from Henrry VIII who was a Tudor King and he certainly wasnt gay. Each country has its own symbols eg. The daffodil or the leek for Wales....the thistle for Scotland and so the Rose for England. Most countries also have a bird to represent their country as America has the eagle.

Because the red rose has been an English symbol since the medieaval period when the houses of York and Lancaster (whose symbols were a white rose and a red rose, but I forget which is which) - the winning house was the one with the red rose and hence the red rose became an English symbol - like the fleur de lis for France, or the eagle for the USA.

Originally before the split of the codes all the big clubs were in the north of England Lancashire had the red rose and still does Yorkshire the white rose-The battle of the roses

The rose is the symbol of England. Hence on the shirt, Thistle for Scotland, Shamrock for Ireland.
I think it is the Tudor Rose from when the hous of Lancaster ruled England 1485-1603.

Because, out of the countries that make up the UK the rose is the symbol of England, just as the thistle is the symbol for Scotland etc.
