the 4200 means 4.2 ghz comparable but that is hype, to get the most out of a system you need fast memory DDR2 which AMD doesn't support yet, and a fast HDD western digital Raptor 10000 rpm with a seek time 1/2 of the next competitor, the processor is just 1 part of the system, if you dont have enough and fast memory you will never get the max out of the processor,

It has been a long time since the clock speed gave an indication of performance.

First of all, Intel CPU platforms have been using DDR2 for a couple years now. AMD just recently made the switch with its newer AM2 platform (the successor to Socket 939). The following article is a good read on the subject:

Realize that DDR2 is not an efficient technology, as you will see in that article. Those that already have a Socket 939 platform like you do should not bother upgrading to AM2 anytime soon, and possibly never. DDR3 is on the horizon, and both Intel and AMD are sure to switch their platforms again in the next year or two.

As for overall performance, your X2 4200+ performs similar to a Pentium 4 560 (3.6GHz) or a Pentium D 840 (3.2GHz) in most applications. The 560 is the Prescott version, which is a single-core CPU. The 840 is a dual-CPU just like yours. Here's another link to look at:

Bottom line is that your CPU is plenty fast for just about any task youll be using it for. In this day and age with new CPU models coming out several times a year, it's hard to keep up anymore.

The X2 4200's clock frequency is 2.2GHz. Probably "comparable" to Intel's Yonah core CPUs.
