The short answer is that we, in general, are getting lazy and undisciplined. The reasons for it are a bit more complex. One of the culprits is the invention of spell check. People do not bother to look up words in the dictionary any more. They just hit spell check when they are done typing and don't really pay attention to the corrections. They just hit the OK button on each word they spelled wrong. Also, there are not as many people today who write things that are important or that they want to impress someone with as there used to be. Today, we click on boxes on e-forms and let the program fill in canned statements. We e-mail and text message each other quickly without bothering to check spelling or grammar. If we do write out a long letter, it is usually checked by a secretary or office assistant before it is sent if it is important.

I think that not speaking nor writing proper English is also a symptom of the increasing informality in our culture. Ever since parents and teachers stopped emphasizing morals, disipline and respect for authority our culture has been degrading. With each successive generation, we are getting more and more improper. When was the last time you heard an adult correct the English of a child? Sometimes, they even get away with it in school.

Spider-Man pretty much summed up my opinion - MTV and all other visual and audio media... for so many people in society, there's not much hype or "coolness" in reading, and you can't learn it by going through a drive-thru quickly...
