Cigarettes are extremely lucrative because some people just cannot live without them. It's addictive. In addition, I think if the government were to ban it altogether, there might strikes. Some people's life might be disrupted and perhaps their working ability might drop. This not only causes social problems but also economic problems.

Why do "they" make cigarettes?
Cigarettes are manufactured because there is a demand for them. As long as there is a demand, there will always be enterprising people to fulfill that demand.

Please understand that even if these businessmen understand the health risk cigarettes present, they will have to weigh their morals against their business mindset. And in the end, they will choose the economic consideration rather than the moralistic one. They are what they are and they are in business to make money and profit. It's what they do.

Cigarette companies employ farmers who have familes who pay taxes. No cigarettes, no farms, no jobs, no taxes.

Tobacco ruins farms for anything else to be planted for around ten years. No tobacco, no farms, no jobs, no taxes for ten years.

Cigarette companies pay a lot of taxes, which pay alot of other things. No cigarettes, no things or more taxes.

Some people are addicted to nicotene. No cigarettes, no nicotene, no detox, hysteria. (Watch Dick Van Dyke in "Cold Turkey")

In short, it has been around so long it would take ten years just to fix the land, we would have to subsidize te economy even more that it is and medical costs would go through the roof as people went crazy. And in all likelihood, people would still grow tobacco anyway. Think Marijuana.

They make cigarettes because people buy them (to increase concentration, for the taste, to get a nicotine high, to pacify an addiction)

and

cigarette sales pay a LOT of taxes --billions

and

The USA has a terrible trade deficit, we buy a lot more from overseas than what we sell to other nations. Boeing airplanes are often our biggest export. What else brings in a lot of bux from overseas? TOBACCO PRODUCTS.

Tobacco creates a trade surplus and pays billions in taxes, so they have POWERFUL FRIENDS in your state capital and in Washington, DC.

Because it's good business for the tobacco companies. People will continue to become addicted to this killer, continue to become ill and die horrible deaths, and the tobacco companies will still keep raking in gajillions of dollars. They actually put more nicotine in cigarettes to make people become addicted more easily. Nice folks.

Oh, my dear!
Why do they make weapons?
Why do they produce toxins?
Why do they produce Colas?
the list could go for ever!
Everything is out there and each one has to individually select the best for him/ her and influence the people around him/ her!
The ones who govern and the others who produce harmful are not going to protect the people, they just want to continue governing and make profits, respectively!
