Early on, neither team was. Once the score was tied, they both got a bit rough. However, Reyna, the US player a poster mentioned faked the injury and stayed down which lead to the first goal for Ghana, he wasn't faking. Reyna has never been subbed out in a World Cup match. He was carried off on the stretcher, and had him walk it off, but he ended up coming out before the end of the first half having actually strained/torn the ligament. No captain in the World Cup would risk such a act as that, because they know it will cost the game, and it did. As for the one player from Ghana who went down without being hit, they called a foul on him because of it.

People should try and give credit were it's due.The Black Stars are a delight to watch. It doesn't matter how rich a country is.Wealth doesn't have a place in football. Even if Germany or any western country was playing Ghana and at the verge of winning, that would have been their style.
Anything good that doesn't go the way the so called big countries want, they have to say something negative about it.If America had won there wouldn't have been anything bad about it.
Like it or not the good or better team won the match.
Ghana is poor but they are still in there. What do you say?.

(yawn) there I was quietly reading the answers, till I re-read the question, and felt compelled to answer.
First of all, pecuniary incentives anad football go together like a horse and carriage--and Ghana is not the first nor wil it be the last to do that.
In my view, your apparently objective question masks someone who is probably an unwitting racist (oh geez, I called the race card...ouch...) : "They are of course a poverty strucken country, and would probably do anything to win."
Yeah, right. you check this blog out http://accradailyphoto.blogspot.com, and you tell me whether we are fighting, and living in huts.
We have a lot of Texan and US rice in this country. Hell, it's probably genetically-modified anyway. If you don't wanna give us aid, you know where to go, thankyou!
Gimme a break. If you cannot come up with an argument more credible than "They are of course a poverty strucken country, and would probably do anything to win", the pls keep it shut. For your information, Ghana has been the trailblazer in Africa for years--just becauase US citizens do not know it does not negate the importance that we hold--from positions in the United Nations--long before Kofi Annan--to other major feats...Ghana is a great country, and might-I-add- RICH...in resources: gold, bauxite, friendliness:-)
Don't talk like I haven't seen the poor and destitute--not to mention trailer trash-- in the US that sleep in cardboards. Pay attention to those "poor", or buy yourself a ticket, and come to Ghana to see the country for yourself.

NO NO NO, its actually the opposite of it. If the us player hadn't tried to get a penalty by faking he got injured, and got up to run and catch Ghana player, he wouldn't be free to advance and score that goal. I particularly think US lost the game just because of the us player didn't get up to at least run and try to get the ball, instead of that he stayed on there without any other player in front to block the Ghana player.
I think he realized he could catch the Ghana player because he was better and faster and fake a fault to prevent himself of looking bad.

The players were out to win the match and they won it fairly.
And about the extra money the government is paying the players u must realise that most of our players play in Europe and are not poor. They would not have died if they did not get the $20,000.

Don't you think USA plays too "physical" and violent????
Where the players from Ghana faking??? What about the players from Italy???
Bruce Arena is better to step down from his "pedestal" and start to coach players tactically and technically, instead of focusing ONLY on the physical condition.

A lot of people on different soccer teams just fall for no reason other than to get a foul.
Soccer can be such a cheap sport with those kind of players. :(

You will be surprised, if you know that a lot of players ( not only in Soccer, but also in Basketball) are also actors. they pretend to get hurt , to get mercy from the referee.
