There is SO much a long time partner gives to life. I don't know that there is just one answer, unless that it's someone to share things with. Share the ups and the downs, the good times and the not-so-good times, be there to sip a cup of coffee with...take walks with...someone to snuggle with...even to be crabby with...of course, they get their crabby turn. It isn't the Big Moments that make up a good relationship. It's the give and take of every day life. Mostly, we want to love and be loved, to help and be helped. I am one of those lucky people who is rarely lonely..even when alone, but I am so glad for my special someone, even after three decades together.

by way of metaphor, someone who will stand under the tree you are climbing (even though you both know you shouldn't be up there) to catch you if you fall, coach you if you get stuck, and congratulate you when you go all the way up and come back safely, and will kiss your scrapped knee no matter how minor a wound.
This isn't perfection. it is simply a realization based in what was happening. i knew why he was standing there and what he did. and sitting in that tree, the "oh s**t" moment came, and i was simply able to define my feelings for him.
