My wife is freaking out because some searches showed up in the IE address history, searches on YouTube for "stripper" and "leather" and such. And some porn adware popped up on the computer when she booted up this morning.

How is this possible? Neither of us made these searches no one else lives here. We just installed a wireless DSL connection. Could someone else be doing this? How did the adware get on our system? I did'nt pay too much attention to the security aspect of things, maybe I should have.

Any info would be appreciated. And if you can quote some credentials that would help me convince the wife.

I think that I just figured out that there is no firewall. That may be part of the problem.

This sounds exactly like adware, or spyware. I use Spybot Search and Destroy to keep my computer clean of such stuff.

Zone Alarm is and excellent Firewall. The professional version has a Spyware Detector/Cleaner. If you have a DSL connection then that means you have a clear address and so are subject to Hacker Attacks.

You should also run an Antivirus software. If you download something or open an e-mail attachment (which is real easy to do), then you could get a virus.

You have viruses installed on you PC from visiting different site. Go to Start and run and type in msconfig. This will bring up your startup options. Deselect everything in the service and startup tabs. This will stop the viruses from loading when you reboot your PC.

After restarting, go to Limewire.com and download Norton Anti Virus. Follow the directions in the .txt file so that the program will run correctly.

After Norton has finished being installed, this will take several restarts, run msconfig again and select everything in Services and Startup so that norton will recognise the viruses.

After everything has been fixed up go to Tools in Internet Explorer and Internet Options - Check to make sure your homesite is the one you would have normally - if not change it to www.yahoo.com until you can set the home page to the one you want.

DO NOT load any of the Adaware toolbars are they have a virus built in so that they can convince you to buy their software.

Hope this helps

If you are one of those computer illiterates with a 24/7 wireless ISP and you don't bother to SHUT your computer down when you aren't using it, then lord knows what all you have on there, Tell dialer's, worms, spy ware etc.etc. There are many down load sites for these so just key word them in to your Yahoo search box and put them on your computer in this order. (and they are all free) AVG, ZoneAlarm, Ad-aware, Spybot se, Spywareblaster, and a hosts file. And even after using them and getting cleaned up and starting over, do not leave your computer running un-attended on a wireless connection. Shut it down when you are not using it.
If at all possible, the above list should be put on every new computer as soon as it comes out of the box. With out this kind of protection, with in the first 30seconds of going on line with a new un-protected computer, you will have what you got and even more!!!

You need to look up how to secure your internet. People drive around just looking for people with unsecure connections like yours so they can use the net for free. This is vital to any wireless connection.

Emails can hijack your computer and mess up your internet settings. Bad websites can also hijack your Internet Explorer.

Or you have a son/nephew/neighbor who is using your PC for evil....
