If your child's school told you that he or she could skip a grade, would you do it? My son is supposed to enter second grade. I got a letter saying that he could go into third instead if we wanted to do that. I don't want to hold him back; he was really bored last year. I just wonder how he'll do socially.

I would not do that, the sudden jump in what hes being taught would shock him an make learning very hard. i have ben on every level from honners to ece, so i know about this.
On the other side of this, if you do make him skip a grade, he will be younger than all the others students. You dont want to be Smart and small at school, others can be very cruel.

Well, if he's like me, they'll call him a nerd...of course, I waited till highschool to skip up a grade. The worst that could happen is he'll be a year younger than everyone else; they'll just think he started early, and if you don't move or something, everyone will already be used to it by the time he gets older.

If he was bored and will do well in a higher grade, go for it now. He is young enough to make friends easily in his new class. Help him succeed. If you hold him back because of friends, he may hold himself back later for the same or similar reasons.

Also, talk to him about it. Let him be a part of the decision so he won't be surprised.

This is an answer only a parent should make. You may also find out if your son can take excelled class, yet still attend other school activities- like lunch, recess,or art with his own grade level.

The social question is crucial. Does he have many friends in his present grade?

I think he'd be fine. Kids make friends easily enough, and he'll benefit from more from the education side of it.

He'd probably do fine, and if he didn't you would always be able to put him back into the 2nd. Give him the opportunity. Good luck.

Ask him what he wants to do, and explain to him what he can expect to happen if he chooses to stay or if he chooses to skip.
