His father James was the best Quidich seeker of his time. That's where Harry gets his skill from, and his mother was very good at Potions and was in general a very smart witch.

james and lily both were aurors and head boy and girl at school.
they were members of Order of phoenix.
they escaped voldemort for three times.
james was quidditch player at school.
lily was good at potions.may be slughorn made her famous because he is so well connected and he likes lily.
these are the reasons why they both are famous.

they're famous (meaning, everybody knows who they are) because Voldemort killed them, and was defeated by trying to kill their baby son.
No disprespect for the dead intended, but it's similar to why Chandra Levy or Laci Peterson are famous- they might not have "done" anything spectacular, but their deaths were tragic and well-publicized, so everybody knows who they are.
How they got rich or their occupations has yet to be revealed.
