Straying from grassroots democracy... Becoming a party for a party, as opposed to a party of the people. It's hard to tell, really. Political parties just slowly move away from their original intentions to find positions on topics that will get them re-elected. During this current generations lifetime, it is very likely that a new party system will be installed (Dem/Repub is currently the third two-party system in American history).

Weaker? You've got to be kidding. Political parties have gotten much stronger over the years. It's rare to see people voting their conscience against their party.
