Every party got started as a minor party.

To provide an alternative to the current parties. Some politicians do not want to be affiliated with a party for whatever reason, the biggest is the corruption in government and the second is that they are independent thinkers and do not want a party to dictate how they are supposed to vote on certain issues. These people are often called moderates because thier views on issues are split between the two parties currently in power.

Some people will run as independents to split the votes from a party and skew the results of the election to the other guy.
