I know that for this American, I don't trust any of the candidates considering running. Senator Kerry has talked about it, and not to long ago, here in Texas he told the citizens he did not care if they did not want another tax hike, they had no choice.
The only people our government needs to take this attitude with are threatening nations. Not the American People. Kerry, and Bush come from the same platform. I as an American am tired of being punished by having my civil rights violated because my home was attacked on 9/11. I don't want another president like this one, and honestly, I no longer want the government I have.I want a real candidate for the people. One that is not afraid to put thier background out there, and provide drug test results, just like the American people are forced to do when they apply for a job., and if they don't want to do that, then get those laws off the books, or a No Vote is all you'll get from me, your not qualified for the job. Just as it is 4 me

Your entire argument is valid and common among most young adults my age all over the country. I really just do not want to see the Election to be a circus, with the Democratsz thinking they have found the key to their salvation after all this time by putting Hillary Clinton into office. That would be the largest scale mistake EVER made in Elections History. It really is choosing the lessor or two equals, and it's so hard to see the difference in the 2 candidates you are choosing from becuase they all sound the same. Pray, I do, Pray for a smarter Nation to get its head out of the hole in the ground and pay attention to whats going on out there. I think the most important thing is to Vote, and clearly educate yourself on the people running before you rush to push a button come November 2008.

I agree with what you're looking for in a leader. I do belive also that a candidate cannot reach a national level of poliitics without being to some degree dishonest and even corrupt, because the candidate in order to be elected has to appeal to as many diverse peoples as possible while also making it seem he/she is against something (that isn't a vote loser). Honesty in a candidate is hard to determine, because if they were honest we'd find out they think just like us or the guy next door (with some of the same prejudices and caustic opinions) and that will eliminate half the population at least as voter support. So we take a chance in voting our candidate into office the first time, but before I vote for him a second time, I want to see the first 4 years as proof of competency and well thought out actions. I want the president to perform like an A student, not a struggling C student.

Not be a Bush would help. Run on issues important to the workers in this country. Run on a platform that will protect the manufacturing base, even though I am not in a place that I will be affected by the loss of it, I know that the country's economy is screwed up without it. Actually get nationalized health care passed, there is no reason that we are the only industrialized country that doesn't already have it, even China and Russia have national health care. I could go on and on, but those should be the most important and is enough for one candidate to have to work on in one term. Oh, put social security and pension reform on the list too. People work their whole lives contributing, in one sense or another, to those programs and are counting on them being there, there is no reason that the people of this country should not be able to count on it.

Vote for anyone who during this embarrassing last couple of decades didn't do any of the following:
1) Call an elected official names.
2) Pass on any rumor that they had no proof of.
3) Supported majority position without trying to continually undermine it.
A candidate that doesn't tolerate the above behavior, who speaks his mind, but votes what the majority want as a true representative (even if he disagrees), and who believes that silence is better than an attitude of "guilty until proven innocent".
That's the candidate I want. I'm a Democrat. I'm appalled at the behavior of some people. They can do better.
We can do better by speaking up everytime we see such behavior, regardless of political side. We have to be citizens first, political parties second, and stop undermining our own country for political power.
Keep speaking up. Great question.

The next candidate needs to not be Bush or Hillary. I'll vote for almost anyone the democrats put up as long as it's not Hillary. I'll consider voting Republican if they put up one of their less wacky candidates- someone other than Frist, Santorum, or any of the kooky wing of the party. Honestly, though, we need a total and complete overhaul of the government - if my only choice for that is Democratic, then so be it.

In my opinion, the most important thing a presidential candidate must say to get my vote is that he or she is committed to winning the war on terror, without considering defeat as in option in Iraq or anywhere else (like timetables for withdrawl, etc).
Like it or not, in favor of it or not, we are at war in Iraq. We CANNOT consider defeat as an option. If we withdraw too early and the country collapses into civil war, the efforts and sacrifices of all the American soldiers and their families will be for naught. We cannot, repeat cannot, allow this to happen!

The candidate that comes out strongly against immigration and supports conservative issues will be our next president. It is overwhelmingly likely that candiate will be Tom Tancredo, R - Colorado.
