Ah but you better get out the hanky for these cause they are most real end of the world flicks I know and they are not pretty..
1950's On the Beach Gregory Peck & Fred Astaire
2000's On the Beach Remake w/ Armand Assante. You will cry at the end.
1980's Threads... Unknown all British cast-this will depress you beyond, it makes The Day After look like a musical.
And for fun!
1980's The Night of the Comet...
1980's The Road Warrior
After those first three, you will need it...

Deep Impact was a really great movie...it came out the same time as the one with Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck...I thought that it was so much better and it actually showed people's lives before and during the crisis...also War of the Worlds...I dont like Tom Cruise but in this movie he's actually pretty good....also one that's funny and not scary is Independence Day with Will Smith...try those have a good time

The Postman and Waterworld. Although those are more postapocalyptic. But still effing good. I hate the naysayers about Costner's films.
Try Night of the Comet. Its an 80s flick about a couple teens who survive a nuclear holocaust. Its a zombie film with a new wave soundtrack. Nothing can beat that.

I would submit two films here for consideration:
The first would be "Soylent Green", starring Charleton Heston. The apocolypse hasn't come, but it's well on the way in this film. Edward G. Robinson's last film role and it gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "going home".
The other is a bit of a cult film. That would be "Silent Running", starring Bruce Dern. It's a bit of a post apocalypse film, but it gives you a lot to think about.

"A boy and his dog" (Independent movie with a young Don Johnson) - Post apocolypse
"Soylent Green" (my personal favorite) - Environmental destruction by man
The original "Planet of the apes" movie series - Atomic war, Hairy apes
"The Omega Man" - Disease
Failsafe - Atomic War
Dr. Stranglove - Atomic War
Colossus: The Forbin Project - Computer run amuck
War of the Worlds (the original was better) - ET attacks
Logan's Run (Kinda) - Future
War Games (A young Matthew Broderick) - Computer run amuck
Attack of the killer tomatoes - Corniest, but best theme song ever

When the wind blows is a British animation of an elderly couple dealing with nuclear fallout. It is very troubling in its innocence. Music by Bowie, Genesis and Roger Waters. Made in the eighties it follows an elderly couple as they try to understand what is happening to them and England in the final days after the bomb is dropped. This is a really good film.

Try Independence Day, or the original "War of the Worlds", that is a great classic, it was made in 1951, and it stars an actor that was excellent in his day, Gene Barry. Or you could get your hands on another movie called "The Daly the earth Stood Still" another classic.

"The Quiet Earth"
A man wakes up to find that he is alone on Earth due to a scientific experiment gone wrong that he had been working on. As time goes by and loneliness is setting in he meets a young woman whom she thought to be the last human. A love affair ensues and out comes the 2nd last man on Earth, anyway you get the point. I saw this movie when i was a kid and never forgot it, it definitely made an impression on me.
