I think the most positive effect of the death penalty here in America is that it really pisses off all those pinko commie bleeding heart Europeans.

I think that's more than enough of a reason to keep it around.

The only positive effect of the death penalty in the western world is that is rids society of people who are perpetual dangers to the general population.

In the U.S. it doesn't seem to work as any type of deterant but the case may be different in other parts of the world.

Unfortunatly we can be most certain that many innocent people have been wrongfully put to death in recent years.

Whether or not it should be re-introduced in Australia should be up to the Australian people.

First of all, it's much cheaper to end a life than it is to give one food and shelter and clothing til who knows how long. As for the death penalty, I think anyone that openly admits to a crime that is physically violent including rape and or death, pedophiles etc then they should be hit with the death sentence. These types of offenders are normally repeat offenders. So it eliminates the repeat part and once again less money to "put them up" for thier term. Especially those that are murderers that admit it blazenly (brag) in a courtroom, they should definately be put to death. No remorse is a sign of a sick person and a repeater.

The same as life in prison without posibility of parole.

Who said there has to be a positive effect?

Somebody was murdered. Somebody else was found guilty of murder. Now it is just a question of what to do that some one else.

Lock him up for the rest of his days. You are still killing him. He'll never be seen again, except by some prisoner he shanks in the exercise yard.

Which is crueler a slow menotonous death alot of it in solitary or a quick if not painless death? It is all in the timing. The longer you think about taking a life the more premeditated your actions become.

I have problems justifying life without parole. You expect a person to spend up to 80 years behind bars, limited contact, wondering who died while he has been behind bars. How is that better?

I am not one for killing but I am not one for the alternatives either. And I am not Austrailian so I can't say for myself what they should do. I think the choice as a lot to do with one's history and one's current situation. They would be better fit to decide that for themselves.

The only good thing about the death penalty is there will be more room for other people in in prison. But it is letting the really bad people off easy. Giveing them death, and they get the easy way out of punishment.

None, no.

Thou shalt not kill. What is ambiguous about that?

For all those who use the Ten Commandments to justify executions, have you read the New Testament? or vengence is mine sayeth the Lord?

If media reports about the actual costs of an execution in the US are correct, feeding and guarding a prisoner for a lifetime is cheaper that killing him.

That the person is dead and there is no chance that he will be able to re commit the same crimes or worse ones.... But i think it should be only used if people are ABSOLUTLY 100% sure that the guy did it and that there is no possibility that someone else did it.

The death penalty prevents criminal from victimizing more people. Recently, we put to death a guy who started one of the biggest gangs in the United States. He managed to put out a contract on several people and have them killed, while he was in prison. His execution put an end to that.

You are 100% guarenteed the person who is executed will never, ever, under any circumstances, get out to harm another person again.

As for should Australia reinstate it??? Hmmm.. I don't live there and do not know how the legal system is there. So no comment.
