it is a concept.
"life" don't exist as an external.
your life is a set of EVENTS among many.
YOU have diverse role in your events .
this is your responsibility to produce PURPOSE for your events.
or...
laughing ,and watching others events.

I believe everybody starts by zero and from there on our life begins to count every decision well taken or not as an extra point.I've heard life it's a game that everyone wants to play and a few 6 trillion people has gained the right to be in it.I don't believe in destiny, but I can only tell you that every human being on earth has a purpose. The difficult thing is to know which or what is our purpose.Every being on earth is born, has to reproduce(to avoid extinction), and die.But we are the exception that CAN do something else between the moment we are born and the day we die. That's why we are called humans and not just another kind of animals!!!

Check this, buttercups and Becky's.
We are conceived by a lab in Switzerland, first and foremost. Then the serum is spread out into the world by medicine, food or water etc. The copulation between a man and woman happens as a cover up for what we like to call, pregnancy. Who knows about that drug that birth mothers receives??? It's more like splicing genes and creating thinkers with different abilities for the next generation (remember we had no idea what to do with the 80's, OK then.=) look what happened. We all look like someone- not quite- but we do. The first sets of Scientist called us clans, Tribes etc. now these days we have clubs, gatherings or something called follower-ships etc.
LOL!! as for the meaning of life. The things you do that would affect another person in this life must be solve before moving on. If that does not happens you get to re-live life again and again, or something close to that effect.
LOL!! the meaning of life is population control which is known to us as WAR.

Man has questioned that since the dawn of time...heh heh (i always wanted to say that) but anyway, i haven't found the answer in any religion, none of their fairy tales make sense or stand the strutiny of objective science or reality. So what then, is the reason for our existence?
Ive come to the conclusion that there is no "reason" or preordained purpose. We came from randomness and will go back into randomness. The chance meeting of one egg with one of a million spermazoa, and then death with our molecules returning into random nothingness.
Pretty dreary, when you think of the loneliness of no afterlife, but then maybe you'll try to make the most of what you can do during the short sojourn you have on this Earth.
What gets me, is that 80% of the Earth's population have a distorted worldview based on religion. Most scientists are atheists, not all, but most. And of the ones who believe in god, the astonomers are the fewest percentage.... that tells me something.
The only rule or law of nature that makes sense is the 2nd Law of Therm....in line with the 'net displacement' that you mentioned.

The purpose of my life is to answer questions like this one.
Since the person who asked the question wanted a better answer, going by the e-mail I got - the purpose of life is to be here for each other, to help one another, to never allow another living, breathing thing to suffer when it can be helped, to make a difference while you are on this Earth, which is why time is so short for all of us. With all the money and resources on this planet, it amazes me that even one child dies of starvation while others who we glorify as heros live in mansions because they have the physical ability to play a sport.

Two lives, physical and spiritual.
The physical purpose of life is to survive. Like the answers already posted, there was no application form from us to be here.Try to stop breathing and see your will to live.
The purpose of spiritual life is everlasting peace for the soul of mankind, which not everybody agrees with or believes in.
i believe man can live without God physically, that is how mankind lived before Adam and Eve, who were the first physical people with spiritual minds.
Many good people live without knowing about the true God in their lives.

According to the Bible we where chosen by God before we entered our mothers womb. God has a purpose for your life, and basically that is to live for him according to the scriptures. We are to follow and study the scriptures in order to know the mind of God, have daily communication (prayer) with him to obtain direction. We are all born with gifts of the spirit that we are to use to glorify God. Admit we are sinners, repent, confess, and believe in our hearts that Jesus Christ is Lord, and died on the cross for our sins. When we have done these things and the end of the world comes, our Lord will take us to heaven where we will live a peaceful and spiritual life loving/praising the Lord with no pain, tears and everything is in harmony as planned from the beginning of time. With all that said, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and we need to live for that light.

To live is indeed to die. That which is immortal is dead for the dead are dead forever. Saying you are mortal is saying you are alive. It is what you do between life and death that gives your life purpose. If you do nothing in life, then nothing is your purpose. If you do something in life, something is your purpose. It is what you do that gives your life purpose. You start with no purpose but your purpose is one you create, unless you are given a purpose by someone else. When you are born, you are the product of love between two people, so your purpose may be to be the child of those that conceived and birthed you. Your initial purpose may have been to be their baby. As you grow, you mature and it is then that you begin to live independently. It is then that you are creating a purpose for yourself. Perhaps it is to be a happy child. perhaps it is to play. Then you move to a much greater purpose. Perhaps it is to get an education and then be successful. What ever your purpose is, it is not determined the second you are born but the second you think about it. You create it yourself. Perhaps it is indeed to die. Hopefully, you have done everything you wanted to do in life by the time your purpose is to die.
"To have purpose is to make purpose."

The purpose of life is a life of purpose. ~Robert Byrne
Here is my thinking. Everyone does good deeds, and everyone does bad deeds. It's just a part of life. So we could say that the good deeds and the bad deeds cancel each other out right? But aren't good deeds in fact worth more than bad deeds? If good deeds are worth more than bad deeds, it is possible for us to leave this world maybe a pinch better than we did entering it. Maybe our purpose is to help make the world better for others?
I don't know, it's one of those questions that we'll never get a definitive answer to until it's too late, if even then we get an answer.
But I should say I have to admire you for pursuing that elusive answer.

It's called the propagation of your genes. Read "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins.
He says on page 11: "I shall argue that the fundamental unit of selection, and therefore of self-interest, is not the species, nor the group, nor even, strictly, the individual. It is the gene, the unit of heredity."
So he delves quite a bit further than did Darwin: It is not that you are living and dying as an individual, or even as a species--rather it is your genes that are being selected for future generations.
So on the gene level, you do not just live and die (start and stop, as you put it); your gene survives and goes on--that is, of course, if you are able to propagate it through copulation.
