Negative 1 doesn't have a square root because, no negative number can be a square. If you think about it, the only way you can even get a negative number is if you multiply a positive and a negative. When you multiply 2 positives, you get a positive, and when you multiply 2 negatives, they cancel each other out. Example: -4x-4= +16. And one (even though it's the loneliest number) is no exception.

The square root of negative one is the complex number called iota denoted by i.
They are useful in higher sciences primarily and as a test to baffle students in junior classes :P

you have to take out an imaginary # which is i and that leaves just a 1 under the square root, so the answer will be i(square root)1 dang keyboards dont have square root button!

the numbers that we generally talk about are real i.e they have a physical significance . however maths demands the usage of other types of numbers the most common among them are complex numbers.complex numbers do not have a physical significance. this means that you can have 1 apple but you cannot have i( a complex number) of apples
now square root of a negative number does not have a real significance and is complex.
