Yes, BET is discrimination. It has daily programming that depicts blacks as gangsta, thugs, and uneducated morons. Please, let's get rid of it!
Oh, that is probably not what you meant. :-)
When MTV was created, it did not show any black videos. It showed only rock and pop. I believe that Michael Jackson and Prince were nearly the only two shown on the network for many years. (do you think that was racist?)
In response to this BET was created after MTV. At first it was just a two hour block of programming before it became a network. It would show mostly R&B, which was not being shown on any other network.
Since, music have evolved. BET plays mostly gangster rap and less R&B. That is just the way it is.
This would not be a problem if blacks weren't discriminated against in the first place. Now, we have a channel for different types of music. Have you seen the Country Music Channel? Rap, R&B, rock, and pop have no business on that channel. That does not make the channel racist. Not at all.
Think about radio stations. You know which ones play the type music that you like. They each cater to a different audience. It does not make the station racist.
Great will be the day where we no longer need to go out of our way to make sure that a particular group of people are being acknowledged and not left out.
The problem is that these "special" acknowledgments, (i.e. BET, black history month and such), do not serve to improve the quality of life for blacks as a whole. Blacks need more that a crappy television network and the shortest month of the year, to overcome problems plaguing this race. It won't stop unfair housing practices, discrimination in the workplace, or shabby educational systems. It's not going to stop teen pregnancy, reduce illiteracy, stop illegal drug use/selling, prevent crime, or eliminate poverty. It does little, if nothing, to empower blacks who need empowering. It's not going to change the victim status that so many choose to hold on to.
Ones culture and heritage should live within that individual, their family and perhaps their community. It should be voluntary.
If you didn't know, it is usually a white man/group, who feels like he is doing blacks a favor, who creates all these special things for blacks. Most intelligent blacks may simply prefer equal treatment. Since equality was to difficult to accomplish, we now have all of these programs.

We have CMT (country music) and that hunting channel. That's probably as stereotypically white as you can get. If you really want to get into it, what the hell is Spike TV about? Just for men? I could yell sexism, but then there is Oxygen. The channel for just women.
Dude, it's all about reaching a certain spectrum of people. BET is more or less a cultural thing. It's been around for at least 15 years.
I think if we had WET, there would be men upset that it wasn't a porn channel. Don't sweat it.

That is a question that I have been asking for a long time but no one seems to be able to answer it. They also get there all black schools and a black history month which would also be racism if whites did that. The only thing I can figure is that every one thinks we owe them something and thats part of there payment.

BET is owned by white executives. If you have ever seen the show the Boondocks, the main character does a study and discovers that watching BET makes you stupid. Perhaps it is a tool the white man uses to keep the black man down?

The cable companies need to fill up the channels, if they have food, history, sports why not black, If you dont like the programning dont watch it. Just as the women have their lifetime for women channel (AKA male bashing channel) where they portray men in a bad light (Rapist, abuser) This is a free country but to watch BET you need to pay so let them watch what they want.

I'm not black, but on occasion I like to watch BET, I'm not a man, but I enjoy watching that Spike TV on occasion, I am a woman and like to watch Oxygen, so I hate all that stereotyping.
I watch the station that offers me the best show for that certain time slot.

Because BET makes money. Enough people want it, so it is on the air. So what. That is america, thank God! BTW, there is a WET channel, but it is PPV and it is mostly a mens channel.

Because, while a lot of other stations don't say they're white stations they seem to cater to white veiwers(i.e.mostly white cast, etc). But that's just my opinion.
