The so called constitutional right is ancient and meant when there was no government. It should be abrogated!! The number of deaths in the USA with firearms is SHOCKING to me as a visitor.Surely there is no necessity in having firearms unless the citizen has ABSOLUTELY no faith in the Government or Police!!FRIGHTENING to walk in some parts of Was DC!

How can anyone who is right thinking say that its "not the guns fault"?I saw over the TV, how a school kid went to school with a gun and shot another toddler! Who cares whether its the guns fault or not.....people are dying because of the existence of the gun.Taking the weapon out of the equation will surely reduce the deaths, dont you think so?

I'm a liberal.
That said, I think one of the fundamental rights we Americans have is the 2nd amendment. Though guns are generally associated with so many problems in our society, our right to own them is still important for a few reasons. First and foremost, it is a freedom. That itself is reason enought to make it an essential part of our identity. Too many people are quick to jump to the defense of other rights that our founding fathers thought necessary for us to have, only to back out of this defense when guns are brought up. We can't cherry pick our amendments to suit our situations because as soon as we give one up, the rest will follow all too quickly. Every American should cherish every right granted in the constitution as if it were his or her lifeblood.
Another reason the right to own a firearm is so important is because an armed population can fend off tyranny much better than an unarmed one. However unlikely it is, Americans can rest assured that if someone had the balls to overthrow the government, that would only be the first step in gaining absolute power here. I realize that this is a weak argument because it's a hypothetical situation, but as evidence, look to any tyrannical government in history and check to see whether the people were armed [e.g., Iraq, Nazi Germany, Sudan, etc.]. On the flip side of the coin, look at the Swiss Army. The reason nobody (including their own leadership) messes with them during most wars is because up until the mid 90's every man over the age of 18 was issued a semi-automatic assault rifle and made a member of the standing militia. When the Swiss are involved in a war, it's because they want to be.

You stepped on a land mine here. Why don't you do your research a little better. In states where concealed carry firearms are not banned, and actually encouraged, theft and gun violence is substantially lower than in states where firearms are all but banned. The principle is quite simple. Criminals couldn't give two craps about the laws (thus the word criminal). So they will continue to use firearms even if they are totally outlawed (go ask the English, they know all about this concept). If they think that an unsuspecting victim is carrying a fire arm too, they are 80% less likely to attack that person, if they know that person is a law abiding citizen who doesn't carry anything, they will be sure to mark that person as their next victim. It is a very simple law of crime.
As for the Constitution of America....so seeing as it is so old, you want to give up all your other rights too?? How about speech, or religion, your right to defend yourself in a court of law, or to be silent? So now that old document doesn't seem so bad....does it?

I lived in DC (South East DC no less) for a couple years and I am glad I had the right to bear arms there! The constitutional right to bear arms may be old but is still very relative today. As our society continues to fall apart my right to bear arms becomes even more important! I am a resposiable gun owner and have never used any of my guns to commit a crime....what you dont realize is most of the crimes commited with guns are done by people who have them illegaly. So taking away my right to have a gun isn't going to stop them anyway. So why make me give up my right when the criminals are still going to do whatever they want because society lets them? In my oppinion, things would get even worse if responsiable gun owners couldn't deffend themselves!

The right to bear arms is our constitutional right. Not to mention that guns don't kill people........people do.
It isn't the guns that are the problem. It is the socio/economic conditions of this country. It is the rampant drug problem. It is the decline of families.
It is many things, but what it is NOT is the guns fault.
Have a good night
I just read what asmul8ed posted. NICE JOB! If we start taking freedoms away where does it stop? I wouldn't want to give up any freedom I have because people blame an inanimate object instead of getting to the root of the problem. I'm not saying every house needs an assault rifle, but banning would make them more desirable.

The gun owners claim that if guns were outlawed only outlaws would have guns. I suppose there is some truth to that. But that shouldn't mean there's nothing we can do. I suggest there is no reason for anyone to have concealed weapons except cops, no reason to have assault weapons at all.... and 72 hour wait so people who are upset can calm down and change their mind before going out to shoot someone they just don't like for some reason. And of course, background checks so no guns are sold to convicted felons. Of course, they'll get them if they really want to have them- but at least make them work at getting them. No sense in making it easy for them. While they're being delayed in the search to buy illegal weapons maybe a few innocent bystanders can be spared.

So are you for banning rocks, cars, shoestrings, scissors, knives, chains, sticks, plastic bags, pillows, belts, hot boiling water, water period, glass, tall buildings, concrete, rebar, trees, rope, gasoline?
How would you stop a wild animal attack just take it? That's ludicrous. How would you stop a knife attack? It can take thirty minutes for the police to respond to a call. It takes thirty seconds for a person to bleed out. I wouldn't want to rely on the police for my safety, not that they are worthy of respect, but thirty minutes is a long time when your throat is slashed.
By the way Washington DC has the strictest gun laws in the nation, law abiding citizens can't carry for self-defense if you don't like the idea then you don't have to visit you can stay where your from, comrade. If you want to be a victim go ahead just leave the rest of us alone.

Last time I heard, a firearm never killed anyone when it was left alone.
People kill people, whether it is with a car, knife, hatchet, hammer, screwdriver, poison, plastic bag over their head, piece of pipe, rope, bow and arrow, rock, hands, or firearm.
This is also why no country in their right mind will ever invade the US as they would never be able to disarm the public.

If gun are totally banned, all someone who wanted one could easily get one from a readily available source, you local policeman, simply by catching him off guard, render him unconscious, and take his. If guns are outlawed, then those in possesssion of guns will be the targets of crime, I am referring to the police, military personnel, and any one else who can have guns.People like you will NEVER get it through your head that guns are inanimate, they don't do anything on its own. It can be good, or bad, depending on the person using it.

O.K. ,lets say guns were banned. Two signs go up at every police station. At one door it says, "honest, lawabiding citizens, turn in your guns here'
At an other door it says, "Criminals, rapests, terrorists, crazies, and other socialy undesirable types turn in your gun here "
Which door would have the longest line?
Thats right, the honest citizen line.
Its not the piece of machinery you need to fear , its the person behind it.

that would require abolishing the 2nd amendment. coming up with gun control clauses to modify the 2nd amendment is apparently too much of a chore for our members of congress who only work about 100 days out of the year. fixing the 2nd amendment for stricter gun control policies making it harder to buy, get a license for, and conceal firearms would require a logical thought process and compassion, something nobody has lobbied any of them for yet.
