Ryan,

I hate to tell you this but I've been there before a few times. If the pressure in your thumb is so severe that it is causing extreme pain then you can go to the ER and they will heat up a needle and poke it in your thumb nail. Yes it hurts briefly. I wanted to kick the tech that did my toe! But it felt so good after wards. I was still pissed off though! If it doesn't hurt, just let the thumb nail grow out. Eventually the bruise will fade away as the nail grows. The thumb nail could die too and then it may fall off? It will grow back though, but your thumb will be exposed. If this happens see the doc. You don't want to get it infected with a staff infection and end up losing your thumb over it. It happens every day!

If it's still really 'fresh' you can make a little hole in your thumb nail. The bruise you see is actually blood. Let the blood out the little hole--make it with a needle or a pin that you sterilized. It will not hurt so much as it does now, and it will cause the dark color to almost completely disappear.

(It doesn't hurt to make a hole in your thumb nail for the same reason it doesn't hurt to trim your nails.)

My daughter accidentally hit her nail with a small exercise weight. It made her nail turn black and blue. A few months later, her whole nail came off and a new one had grown in underneath.

Put ice on it or wait for the nail to grow out.
In the meantime, cover it with a nail enamel close to the color of your flesh.
