In most cities they make pretty good money compared to other workers.

I read a lot of replies here and some people think that the only risk a police officer has is getting shot at. That's not the real risk.
More cops get hurt in car accidents than anything else. Plus only 2 out of 10 cops can hope to retire without ever having been seriously injured through out their career.
The reason that they aren't paid what they should in most cases is because people don't think much about police until they need them. Police are an easy bargaining chip for your local politicians to say why they are raising taxes and constantly force budget cuts or man power cuts. It is left to the citizens and departments to decide. But the reality is that any politician who wants to score points will chop police pay and say that they aren't educated enough to demand the high pay that they should get.
Firefighters and Police Officers are also part of the problem, most of them do the job for the sake of doing the job. Nit because they get to beat up on people or get laid but because they are doing something that they think is right.
Lastly, if the police are offered a poor raise, they have no recourse except to go without a contract since it is unlawful for police officers to strike. They are given "take it or leave it" terms.

They make decent money. No they are not paid like corp exec, or micheal jordan, but they do alright.
As far as risking their lives everyday, thats debatable. Sure, some days they do... but that is rarer than you think. We all risk our lives everytime we get behind the wheel of a car. The odds of you dying in a car crash is greater than a policeman being killed on duty (unless he's driving).
In comparison, our brave men and women in the military. Who earns more? Probably the cop, I think. Which is more dangerous? The military.
I'd rather see a pay increase for our troops than cops. There are soooo many dirtball cops that use their badge as an excuse to smash a few heads. Not saying they are all like that, but there's enough of them. I salute the honest cops, and spit at the bad ones.

i think thats a good question...because the police do risk their lives to help civilians in their problems, wheather it is an ordinary house-breaking case or some major murder case. That, i reckon is something the goverment has to think about... because if they r paid low, then they would accept bribes to make extra money. That would spoil the whole thing. The guilty would get away with what he wants. The whole law would be ruined. The country would suffer heavily. But, of couse, on the other hand, it is a govenment job. so it would have its own benefits and all...

Most police officers will never put their lives at risk. Only a small portion are even ever shot at. This risk rises in the city so perhaps only city police should be paid more?

Don't know, just like firefighters risk their lives as well, so do our troops. I don't understand why those that risk their lives to protect and serve, serve our country, or save someone from a burning house or whatever get more money for doing so. It's a shame really. Teachers get paid more than the above, and all they do is stand and sit and teach kids, that's not risking anything.

because the job isn't about the money; its about loyalty, justice, and making a difference. I agree that they are severely underpaid, thats why I'm went to grad school instead. therefore I wouldn't have made a good cop.
I'm thankful everyday that there are people out there who put themselves in harms way for the benefit of others. Its a shame we don't reimburse them for all they do.

Because the United States voted for George Bush. If it wasn't for him government employees would probably make a lot more money.

BECAUSE...
They love what they do. What other job can you think of where you get to wear a gun, carry a night stick, be the boss and get laid wherever you go? Did I mention that they get to gang up on people?
If they were doing it for the money, don't you think they'd find a nice cushy stockbroker's job? Besides, they earn more than soldiers who get shot at more often.
