If you will be using your laptop for multimedia applications i.e. music, graphics, video, etc. I would suggest spending a little more money on a Mac. If you're going to use it for everyday tasks without lots of high-end graphics and gaming applications you will find that you get more from a HP machine than most others. HP generally provides more in the hardware and preoloaded software area as well as after market support than many other manufacturers. Before buying a new laptop determine what your needs are and purchase the machine that slightly exceeds your demands. You'll be much more satisfied with your computer if you do this. Also consider buying screen coverage. If you crack or otherwise damage your screen, it can cost as much as a new laptop to replace. Good luck!

Dell or Apple - it just depends on what you'll be using your computer for -
Dell for more business oriented things - Apple is better for graphic designing needs.
Don't buy one through an electronic store -
Call up the customer service people at Dell or Apple or talk to a local computer programmer, In formation Technology person for help -
It takes a really long time to decide what the right one for you is because buying a laptop is a pretty big investment -
Things to look out for are the weight, size, what you will be using it for, and your budget.
Hope that helps.

I would recommend you buy a macintosh (apple) computer if you want a computer that isn't going to cause you any problems. They are quite a bit higher priced than a windows computer, but you don't have the risk of the computer crashing as you do with windows. Also, it is very rare to get a virus on a macintosh computer. Definitely worth the extra money.
If you're sticking with a Windows, I would definitely NOT recommend an HP.
Hope I'm helpful.

Personally, HP sucks they seem to crash after a short while, Dell is good if you are looking for a general type machine emails word processing spreadsheets....that kind of stuff though they have this new models XTS or X-something, not too bad id say but they cost like over 1500. Gateway's are good esp. if you also want to play around with linux, they take them pretty well. Acer, is pretty good and comes under 1k. compaq, HP its all the same company, id only trust those guys with printers and s*** like that.

We bought a Toshiba because it ranked #1 5 years in a row in a consumer reports magazine. We haven't had any problems with it. Our last one lasted like 7 years and the tech support was plesant.
Good luck

i do contract work for both ibm and dell and have been involved in several network roll -outs for both and we have had major issues with both dell and ibm lap tops so i strongly suggest you go Sony. I have seen a brand new dell lap top burst into flames!!!!!!!!! and ibm stinkpads are just cheap and nasty with a low battery life!
