It has mainly just been around forever. I'm not into dance history, but I've heard that it's the oldest of the couples dances, and that pretty much every other couples dance descended from it.

It's probably the easiest and quickest ballroom "basic" step to learn, and it has a very graceful, smooth motion that makes it the most "ballroom" of all the ballroom dances. But at the advanced levels, it's also one of the most difficult ballroom dances. And it's a good "foundation" dance because it shares a lot of steps with Foxtrot, Polka, Viennese Waltz, and even some of the Latin dances.

It's also one of the most widespread dances. If you go to a ballroom, they'll play a couple waltzes during the night. If you go to a Polka joint, they play a couple waltzes. If you go to a country joint, they'll play some country waltzes. If you go to a wedding reception, there will be a waltz or two. And so on. My wife and I were out tonight at a Zydeco dance, and they played a waltz at one point.

Many rock 'n roll and pop hits are done to a waltz beat. I was just hearing Anna Nalick's "Breathe (2 AM)" on the radio, and it's definitely a very danceable waltz. Makes me want to get up and start doing Waltz reverse turns. I love it when rock and roll uses an old familiar beat, like Santana using a cha-cha beat, or a big rock or country hit turning out to be a pretty little waltz.

So the waltz has everything--ease and grace for beginners, challenge for advanced dancers, it's used in all kinds of music, etc.

The purpose of waltz when it was originated was to find a convenient way for the upper classes to interact between the sexes. It was considered scandalous because it was the first dance to employ a clinch hold between two members of the opposite sex. It also was an exclusive dance where a person did not change partners. Eventually it became a means to distinguished the well-bred from the not so well-bred at tea functions during the victorian era. Nowadays waltz is used for strength training in the legs and back, for enjoyable phyiscal therapy for hip replacement patients, and as a dancing foundation for students of ballroom dance.

I love the waltz. It is so elegant! I have always loved it since I was a child. I love the way people dress when they waltz. I love the classic music. The purpose, please. It is an older type of dance, but why ask this question? What is the purpose of break dancing or disco dancing? What is the purpose of line dancing. The purpose is to dance. Dance!

It's not my favorite dance, but it IS one the required competitive dances in ballroom. There are different forms of waltz for competitive dance - Waltz and Vienese Waltz - American Smooth and International Standard.
