There were two of them. The first was Diogenes, the ancient Greek you are probably thinking of. The second one was Abin Sur and he was the first Green Lantern of the space sector that included Earth. When he crash landed on Earth, he knew he was dying so commanded the Power Ring to find someone who was worthy to take the ring and continue his mission. The requirements were that the man be honest and without fear. The Ring chose Hal Jordan to be the new Green Lantern.
