The front office is where a business deals with customers or clients and makes its appearance to the world. The back office is where the work gets done. A front office assistant needs to have people skills and be good with the public; a back office assistant needs to know how the guts of the business work.

From my understanding, front office assistant is one who deals with customers/public, the back office assistant is one who literally works in the back- that is- they do not deal with the public. Hope that helps.
