How can I get a rust spot off it's on a light brown wood?

I would try using some Naval Jell Rust Remover before sandpaper.

go to your local hardware store and ask the sales person to help you select a fine grain sand paper. lightly rub the sand paper with the grain of the wood.

You could lightly sand it, and and restain it in a color to match the rest of it.

If it's not too deep, sandpaper.
