in elderscrolls IV oblivion after you get in to the mages guild on the third task after u get the translation book and you tell him all the funky word shouldnt it say quest updated but it hasnt said that yet

You have to cast the spells the translator tells you about at the pillar (as in a ranged attack) i think they include drain magica and a fire spell but i'm not sure it was a while ago when i did it, quick save before you cast the spell because there is an order involved and the pillar will attack you, odd but true, then it will open and you can continue adventuring! you have to open the pillar to get it yo say Quest updated

To complete this quest, you have to press one of those buttons, then cast that spell effect on the pillar. Once you do all four, the pillar will open and reveal a stairway to another level. You then have to go through this dungeon and recover the Ancient Elven Helmet (more button pressing involved, here). I believe that you then have to return the helmet to one of the quest-givers (journal should update by now with map directions).

at the Arcane university, talk to raminus polus, he will ask you to get 40 alchemy ingredients, 20 of one ingredient and 20 of another. BUT here`s the catch, i looked it up, and if you bring 20 of ONE of the ingredients, he'll let you back in. so don't bother getting 20 of each. I had to look for dragon's tongue and redwart flowers, and if you need to find those, i suggest you look near leyawin, and the black marsh. This happened to me when did the theives guild, and HAD to steal from the mages guild. so i suggest you beat the mages guild first.
