I wasn't hiking, but I was cycling through Nova Scotia, Canada, an area not known for bears. As I was riding along, I saw something lumber out of the trees onto the road. It was about 30 feet away from me and I was fast approaching it.
At first, I thought to myself, "Oh, look at that big black dog."
Then I finished the thought, "Oh, look at that big black dog, BEAR!!!"
Luckily before I could even be afraid, the bear turned around and ran back into the forest.

I was cooking bacon, and I looked up and there was a young black bear on the other side of the creek sniffing the air and giving me the eye. It decided to move on down the creek. I have also startled mature bears and had them run away from me. They sound like an avalanche crashing down the mountain.

Actually I was camping in Mammoth Lakes, CA. We were in a tent, but our neighbors were in an RV. The bear ripped open that motor home like it was a sardine can. I must have smelled the food they had in there, but thankfully no one was inside. Then all of the sudden, she/he became disinterested and went back off in the woods.
