I know people usually do that for jobs and getting promotions but is there ever another reason to do that? Like dealing with people in general, what do you get out of it.

Never if you wish to live your live with all your dignity and self respect intact. What good is all that money if you sold out who you are to get it? Selling themselves out like that is why so many so-called succesful people are such haters.They can't stand themselves,so how could they like anyone else

You must (kiss butt) in all walks of life, if not, you may find yourself living in a gutter without a job or a home! People "kiss butt" to pacify other people so things won't get out of hand! I use to have this rotten boss, who was always yelling and putting people down, and we all hated him, but we just kept on smiling and agreeing with him just to keep our jobs, that is called: kissing butt! I have terrible neighbors, who can shoot you if you get them angry, we hate them, but we all just smile and wave and keep everything nice, so our animals, house, and our lives won't be harmed. That's called: Kissing butt! I use to be married to a nut case, but I was nice and sweet to him and would comfort him even though by then I couldn't stand him. Why was I so nice? So he wouldn't kill me in my sleep! That's called "kissing butt"! Ya see what I mean by saying you have to kiss butt and pacify others in order to live!

Kissing butt is very necessary if you want to get ahead at work. It may also be useful to get your child in a preschool with a long wait list.

other than good grades, a job, a raise, u could get some kind of popularity. if i had known my spanish teacher gave better grades to kiss ups i would have kissed his butt and given him a box of chocolates. but...its kinda stupid. usually dealing with friends and stuff doesnt need "butt kissing"

It is an EXTREMELY cheesy way to get what you want or desire. Some peopel have no shame...just think of the man who took a childs place on the lifeboat on the movie Titanic, and on top of that, he was the bastard who pushed the ship to go faster.
I would only do so if it were to save my life, but that's about it.

Because many people in positions of power feel entitled to it. Buck the system and some little butt kisser will zoom on by you.

I think you'll find that 'kissing butt' in varying degrees goes on and on throughout life. In can be seen in very subtle and discrete ways and then you see those that do it very openly. As you mature and have several jobs you'll see it in a variety of ways.

I can think of one other reason. It would be in dealing with an in-law or family member from your husband/wife's side whom you don't see eye-to-eye with but put up with for the sake of not rocking the boat with your spouse.

Sometimes you have to be diplomatic- which can feel like kissing butt- when you deal with your in-laws (mainly mother-in-laws).
