AFI isn't Goth, dear. They're indie/emo.
Irregardless, ignore the fools who are advising you not to do something you think is cool and awesome. If you want to do something, go for it! Let me give you some tips:
- Just because your Goth doesn't mean you have to hate everyone, or even act depressed/sad. Be who you are, because Goth is just a way to dress/look.
- If you wantto look Goth, I suggest you don't just apply your eyeliner any which way, get creative!
- Black nailpolish, deep blood red, and white nailpolish is also accepted.
- Unfortunately wearing regular clothes with your Gothic style make-up isn't going to work, try wearing black/grey/deep red clothes.
- Don't get your clothes exclusively from Hottopic, just because your Goth doesn't mean you can't shop at Hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch, American Eagle, ect. I know pleanty of Goths who can pick the right "dark" and "scene" looking clothes from what are normally considered "Preppy" stores - DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF!
- Get really involved and into music!
- Dye your hair black and cut it in an emo mowhawk, or sweep it to one side of your face if it's long enough. ALSO - you can temporarily dye it pink, black, purple ect. and accentuate your look.
Be who you are, especially if your a happy kid who likes to have fun. It will only put down the stereotyping that Goths are sad/depressed people. Although because a lot of teenagers are into the "dark" and "mysterious" scenes, a lot of people are going to call you a poseur - so watch yourself.

Okay: being a goth and being involved in the goth scene are two totally different things. Being goth means suscribing to a gothic point of view. (If you don't know what that is, try goth.net. But you're new to this, so don't post.) Being involved in the goth scene means going to goth clubs and hanging aroung places where goths congregate. On makeup and fashion: Most goths do not, in fact, wear straight black all the time. Goth is a state of mind, so you can wear a pink bunny suit if you want and still be goth. Most save the 3-hour makeup for special events and clubbing. Furthermore, The Cure insists that they are a pop band, not a goth band. AFI seems more punky. Try listening to Siouxsie And The Banshees or Bauhaus.

Research the true concept of being goth first, then decide. Actually they aren't suicidal and dismal like a lot of us older folks think. Both my sons are goth and one does wear the eyeliner and nail polish. He has the features to get away with it though. Goth is actually about finding the beauty in things others see as negative or dark.
But like any other phase you are going to bring on negative feedback from people, you have to be able to deal with this in a truly positive way. Research it first though there are websites out there.
And by the way, dog chain leashes are inexpensive ways to get the chains, just tuck the handle into your pocket after tying it around your belt loops. I have no dog leashes anymore because of this.
If you do follow through, be prepared for the negative looks, and other feedback you will get. And start listening to some old punk too the kids now call it old goth.

Why do you care if goth is being cool. If you're "doing" you, then go for it. Being goth, isn't coming on with the whole attidue of not giving a whoots about what anyone says or does to stop you from being you. Well, that's the whole purpose of being your ownself, whether you're emo, gothic, preppy, punk, or whatever. JUST BE YOU!!! And don't care about what people say, and go with your best ability to be "fresh with it," if you're gothic. Never let anyone put you into a category of their own, you choose to do whatever you want. Mke doke, bye sweet pea!

Does it matter if it's cool? If it makes you happy, and lets the world know who you are and how you express yourself, that's all that matters. I did the Goth thing for awhile, then I changed and grew out of it. It was what I needed and wanted at the time. So be yourself, whether it requires eyeliner or not is up to you.

I love afi and the goth scene but everyone does it now so it seems like it no longer expresses individuality. Overkill big time.

i used to be a goth, i put on the eye liner, nail polish all that sh*t. if you really want to get into it you should go to the clubs, hang out at the local hangouts, talk to other goths online, that type of sh*t.

i think that it is all up to your community. go around and see what most of your peers are into. i am from the land of rich white men so goth is not cool to me. i think that u should only be goth for 1. attracting ladys. and 2. getting friends. make shure you don't do drugs and cutting, for your sake.
