Washer manufacturers recommend occasionally running a cycle with the washer empty to sanitize the washer. Run a short, hot-water cycle and add 1 cup of bleach. That should remove the "musty" smell from the washer and sanitize the whole system. This practice is especially important in the summer, when any water that remains in the washer after use can "sour" very quickly.

Your washing machine is not drying out between loads, or perhaps you are leaving clothes in it all day or overnight. Remove clothes promptly and leave the washer lid open between loads.

You also might change brands of laundry soap.

To get rid of lingering odors, bleach will do the trick. Do a load of whites and use one cup of bleach in the wash. Let it soak a half hour with the washer filled with water, then run the cycle. Bleach will kill bacteria and other odor causes sources. Use dilute bleach on a clean rag and wipe down the entire inside of the washer. Get up all dirt and caked on soap and make the washer shine. Wipe your washer clean once every week or so as built up dirt/soap will harbor all sorts of grosseties that can get smelly when damp.

Get the washer totally clean, then make certain to allow it to dry out inside on a daily basis. (maybe leave the lid open during the night).

Do you leave the lid up after you are done all your loads of laundry? You should always leave the lid up after you done all the laundry. It need to have air going in and out to let it dry and circulated fresh new air in .this way it gets rid of all the damp stank air ,take it from me as I take care of an apartment building and there is an abundance of washer I have to take care of.Hope this helps :)

I put in a lot of bleach and a lot febreeze. Run hot water with it and at a full tub of water. Rerun just with water. Seems like a lot of water to waste, but it does the trick.

Dont foget to pull the water hoses off the back and run water threw them to clear them out or just replace them . I did with mine and it helped. they get clogged and that can create problems too.
