Here are the pros and cons of all the carriers :

Cingular -
Largest network in the United States period.
GSM technology which allows for nearly all of their phones (tri or quad band capable) to function overseas (GSM is the global cellular standard.)
Large selection of phones, many of which are on the cutting edge of what you'll find stateside.
Rollover...duh, 'nuff said.

Verizon - 2nd largest network within the nation....they market quite well, but they're still no. 2.
Antiquated CDMA technology which is totally isolated within US borders. That shortfall also applies to their phones as well.
They're by no means the most ethical of companies...just something to keep in mind.

Nextel/Sprint -
A merging conglomerate of non-compatible equipment that is bound to get really ugly, and soon.
Together, the 3rd largest network....by themselves, awful.
Nextel coverage and Sprint coverage as stand-alone companies have lousy reception and their receptive ability falls off the map often.
Plus you'll be the reciever of double taxes through the existance of two Nextel companies (Partners and Communications)..makes bills inconsistant and ugly.

T-Mobile - while they are a good company, their penetration into the US market is major-metropolitan based only. They have awesome coverage and really cheap plans....if you live in a big city. Suburbs or rural areas....good luck getting a single bar.

We had Cellular One, which has now changed to Alltel. We tried others, but because we live in the middle of nowhere, we had a lot of trouble getting signal. Alltel's maps show that we shouldn't have any signal where we live, too, but we do, and the phone service is wonderful. Verison was the worst in this respect, but I've heard they're improving out here.

I'm pleased with Alltel for other reasons, too. Their customer service really IS customer service; they're friendly and helpful and I've never had a bit of problem getting my questions answered. Calls aren't constantly dropped, which was another Verison shortcoming, and I haven't heard that this was fixed. Alltel has several great plans to choose from, and now have even added that calling circle thing, where you can pick ten people on other systems that you can call all the time for free. We LOVE that one!

My son lives in Seattle, and I believe he is on Cingular and likes it very much.

I don't know what services are available where you live, but I would recommend Alltel if you have that option.

Most all consumer reports (and Clark Howard) rate Verizon as #1 in overall customer satisfaction and T mobile as #2. The irony is, Verizon is the most expensive and T mobile is the least. Like Clark, I opt for the cheapie. I have been a T mobile customer for many years now (ever since they bought out Voice stream) and love them.

depends where you live and where you go. ask people in those areas. some companies are better than others in certain areas. a company may have the best network, but if they have trouble in the areas you frequent who cares. check around your people. as far as customer service goes, i like verizon.

good luck

Cingular is great because they do not disable features on your phone. If you are a tech geek this is good...
