The only time I insult others about their spelling and/or grammar, is when I KNOW they're American, and only when they've been very rude to others, usually when they claim someone else is stupid.
You know... the type of person that tells foreigners to "speak inglesh or get the **** out!" and yet, they themselves don't know the language. It's pretty irritating.
Misspelling intended.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't like insulting people who use poor spelling and grammar. I prefer to be friendly. :) However, being a writer and editor by education and profession, I *do* feel the need to help people improve their writing, especially since -- like it or not -- others WILL judge your intelligence and abilities by the way you write. And if you use truly terrible spelling and/or grammar, you won't get nearly as far in life (personally or professionally).
Plus, if someone is an adult who was born and raised in the U.S., there really is no excuse for having the written skills of a 3rd grader. Some people are just lazy, while others have true learning disabilities, like dyslexia. However, even dyslexics can learn and improve their skills, so that's not an excuse either. (I know dyslexics, so I speak from personal knowledge).
All this being said, if I correct someone's spelling and/or grammar, I try to make sure the person is an American first. If the person is from another country, and English is not his/her first language, I take a different and much more tolerant approach. :)

That's true in some sense of what goes on here. But one can tell the difference between an English as a second language question or one by someone, who is poorly educated. Even worse those who use abbreviations, to appear cool. It isn't cool, and makes them look like an idiot.

One of the abuse categories is "Not in English/Not Comprhensible." So, that's part of the rules of conduct of the site.
And here's what I said on a similar question a while ago: An occasional spelling or grammar error is one thing, but people who constantly type like this: "Hey!!! can u hlp me wit a problem..... i like dis guy an hez seeing sum1 else and i don no wut 2 do??????" It doesn't look cool, it makes them look like they have an IQ of 4, it takes longer to read than normal words, and in most cases, it even takes longer to type, so there's not even a "practical" reason, if you could even call it that. It hurts my eyes to look at that, and it's just plain annoying.

When English is a second language, I give a small leeway.
However, when they've been learning English since kindergarten and they're still messing up (really really bad...I can mind some typos as my posts are never perfect), then I get upset.
