To those people that have been, I was wondering if cheap or mid range accomodations mean staying in a roach motel. I had some bad experiences in Morroco, Tunisia, and Egypt I know that in countries like this you have to pay a bit of money to stay in a good clean place with your own bathroom. I have a phobia of insects and sharing bathrooms.

Just a month! Too short a period.

Please don't get misguided. Certain people have a kind of impression that the facilities in India, at tourist places, come for free or almost dirt cheap as if the people involved here have nothing to bother about their business, expenses, inflation and the employees to feed. A kind of charity!!

If you need reasonable service, cleanliness, hygiene, separate toilet-bath, running cold and hot water, airconditioning etc. you should be prepared to shell out around US $20 -25 upwards per day per room on twin sharing basis in major cities in a hotel and about US $ 12-15 for other places. For free service, perhaps most of us know where to stay and maintain. You may get accommodation for even less than US $ 10 per day but you will have to sacrifice certain facilities. Now those who understand and have preferences for quality of life, they are happy to pay and enjoy their stay, irrespective of the fact that they are Indian in India or foreigners.

Now, when you come to India and choose to stay at a reasonable decent place, don't compromise on promised facilities, You have every right to demand and insist for whatever is promised to provide. Rules of the game are very clear, understandable and enforceable in India as well as could be in any other civilised country.

Please take care and enjoy your stay, getting full value of your money.

In order to really enjoy India, you need to have an open mind. If you focus on your negative experiences in other countries, you will not have fun on your trip. Considering that US $1 is equal to about 47 rupees, it is not expensive to find a good hotel, although it does depend on where in India you are staying. However, if you really have a fear of insects, you have to stay in the city and in a very developed area the entire time, which would mean you couldn't go to many tourist spots in India. I suggest you join a tour group, because that sounds like your only option.
